The Roman army was perhaps the most advanced army of its time. Specifically, the Armour of the Roman army was made out of several structures of great complexity.

A look at different types of Roman Armours:

Lorica Segmentata: This armour was made of wide ferrous strips fixed firmly to internal leather straps. The metallic bands were then plac

ed horizontally and served the purpose of protecting the back and chest of the soldier. The complexity of this armour demanded more detailed work which explains its higher cost as compared to other armours. Hence, only legionnaires used the lorica segmentata owing to their higher position in the army.

Lorica Squamata: Made out of small metal flakes, usually iron or bronze, sewn together; the lorica squamata armour was used during the Roman Republic and even in later periods in history. As the scales overlapped each other in all directions, this armour provided better protection to the soldier.

Lorica Hamata: The lorica hamata was used by the primary legionary and secondary auxiliary troops. It was composed mainly of bronze or iron. The armour was made by alternating and interlacing various rows of vertical and horizontal rings that made the armour flexible.

Roman Helmet: An ancient Roman soldier used to wear a helmet made out of iron to protect his head, neck and the sides of his face.

Basic Archery Tips for Beginners

30/10/2014 3:59:38 PM

Archery is a wonderful great sport that can be enjoyed by almost everyone. It promises lot of fun and is indeed a wonderful way to spend time with friends and family over the weekend. Even if you are looking for a hobby, archery is the perfect choice. It is extremely fulfilling. You can pit your skills against yourself and can enjoy this sport with modern bows or traditional archery shots.

If you are new to archery, here are some basic tips to get you started:
  • Choose the correct anchor points. Anchor point is basically the place on your face where you pull the string back. Typically, the most common anchor point is putting the index finger right below the chin and the bowstring rarely touching the tip of the nose. But you can always try different anchor points and find the point that is the most comfortable to you.
  • As a novice, you may try to grip the bow handle as tight as you could. But your grip on the handle of the bow should be comfortable and lax. If you hold the handle of the bow tightly then it may cause the bow to rotate and twist and may cause the arrows to lean on the left and right side.
  • When you are aiming at the archery target, keep all your focus on the archery target until the arrow lands there. Concentrate on the spot that you want to hit. Aim for at least 10 seconds as you concentrate on the shot and then shoot. Keep your bow arm up while you are focusing and concentrating on the target as lowering the bow arm can cause the arrow to be changed downward and may result in inaccurate shots.

  • Stay as calm and relaxed as possible before you take a shot. If you are nervous and uneasy, you may not be able to aim better. You may end up moving the bow suddenly or you may be you would release the bowstring suddenly, running your aim. Take a deep breath and relax yourself when out in the field for archery.
  • Last but the most important of all make sure that you have the right archery equipment. Using wrong or poor quality equipment can adversely affect your aim and accuracy. Equip yourself with the right bows and arrows. Find out the ideal bow height, bow length and bow weight and type of bow to make the right buying decision. Search the web for valuable information on buying the right archery bows and arrows.
Hope these basic archery tips help you in getting started with this fun filled and fulfilling sport.
